Finding main idea and details should be an easy task, and yet they struggle with it. Some of my 5th grade students are struggling with reading now, and they should already have the basics down. I was inspired by the way these adults are taking the opportunity to learn what they missed out on the first time - a chance to read. Even though it is not in relation to the students I teach, it may be what their future holds if they do not start making changes in their lives.

The NY Times had an interesting article about illiterate adults who are trying to make a change. I cannot wait to use this strategy with my students so they can see that they are good readers, they just need to practice the skills to prove it to themselves.Īnything teachers can do to help their students gain a greater interest in reading is a plus, in my opinion (and hopefully everyone else's). The article addresses the fact that, through using this strategy, we are allowing students to access prior knowledge and experience to help them relate to what they are learning, as well as the allowing students to practice their comprehension skills when having to relay what the song is trying to tell the listener. The song takes you through the last part of the 20th century, and it does a fantastic job of reviewing the major events everyone should know about.

I had a teacher in college who taught us the same way, and I am a little sad to say I didn't remember this until just now, when I read the article. After reading an article about how to use pop culture to teach students, I am ready to start doing the same.
